Nothing stays the same, as they say, and when making an independent documentary, sometimes that is all too evident …
Sadly, we have had to wave farewell (for now) to Saraj Alkemade (Gaffer) and Tim Egan (DP) who have taken up new challenges in other arenas. Saraj is currently undertaking a degree in GeoScience at Monash Uni (we think that is a pretty novel excuse for being unavailable – and we also love Science!) and Tim is fully occupied with his full time day job as Senior Editor for one of Melbourne’s top advertising agencies, responsible for some of Australia’s most popular ad campaigns (as well as writing, directing and editing his own short film, Curve – check out the teaser trailer here.). Both Tim and Saraj contributed hugely to the film in so many ways and we look forward to sharing a drink (or several) with both of them at the premier. (It’s not really a final goodbye, as they both remain on standby for the film, should it be required and should schedules align in our favour).
While we are sad to break up the band (as it were), we are also really delighted to be able to welcome Shaun Herbertson onto the team in the role of DP. A full member of the Australian Cinematography Society (ACS), Shaun comes to A Life Unexpected with experience shooting both nationally and internationally, creating content for television, film, news, corporate films and music videos. Shaun’s varied credits include Fashion Asia (F.A.D. Group), Inside MMA (Spike TV), Highway Cattle (documentary), 36 Questions (feature film) and the multi award-winning Chris & Josh (The Webseries), among many others.
And lucky for us, Producer Ben Steel is also a highly experienced Camera & Lighting crew member, with credits on Dark City, Babe: Pig In The City, The Matrix and Two Hands, to name but a few, so has stepped in to cover Saraj’s role, as well as continuing to direct and shoot the Behind The Scenes footage – needless to say, we are very grateful to have such a multi-talented team!
Our Melbourne Stills Photographer, Christoph Ziegenhardt is also now full time employed in his role as Creative Director for the Thankyou Group – a social enterprise raising money to aid and assist the poorest communities in developing nations – check out their work here.) While again sad that Christoph isn’t able to work with us (because he’s off saving the world, which again is a pretty good excuse), we are really thrilled to welcome Stefano Ferro to the film as our Stills Photographer, who joins the team with experience in sports, portraiture and film photography – which makes him perfect for this project! (as you can see from the stills we’ve included in this update).
Joining the talented and delightful existing crew members, Tim McCormick (Sound) and Jo Fletcher (Makeup & Hair), along with Director, Sally McLean, Producer, Ben Steel and Co-Producers Billy Smedley and Marg Woodlock-McLean, we’re very excited to be moving forward in this final phase of filming with such a skilled and lovely group of film professionals being added to the team.

More news on the film to come tomorrow, so stay tuned …
