After our very successful filming in Queensland in June this year, which was followed, sadly, with the passing of Olympian and genuinely kind and generous human being, Ron Clarke, the team decided to take Franz’s own advice and took a hiatus from A Life Unexpected to take stock, refresh and get ready to come back with new energy and drive.
Director, Sally McLean, decided to stretch her wings in a different direction, creating the web series Shakespeare Republic, which she also produced and directed, featuring fellow actors Michala Banas (Upper Middle Bogan, McLeod’s Daughters), Alan Fletcher (Neighbours), Rowena Hutson (2015 Most Outstanding Comedy Winner, Melbourne Fringe Festival) and, yes, ALU co-Producer, Billy Smedley (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) and ALU Producer, Ben Steel (Home & Away, Winners & Losers), performing monologues from Shakespeare’s collection of works.
Sally also performed in the series, with her interpretation of Sonnet #18, and managed to rope ALU Director of Photography, Shaun Herbertson and Sound Recordist, Tim McCormick into also coming on board! (Tim also Sound Edited and Designed)
Described as “… a sophisticated twenty-first century series with its own particularly Australian flavour.” (The Shakespeare Blog, Stratford-upon-Avon, UK) and receiving attention such as Alan Fletcher’s episode playing “Macbeth” being listed in the coveted “Shakespeare Things To Do This Week” list published by Shakespeare Magazine in the UK, Shakespeare Republic: Season One has been viewed by over 17,000 people in 58 countries and has since been Officially Selected for four film festivals internationally, with news on several more yet to come in the next few months.
The first season of Shakespeare Republic has been so successful that Sally and the team are already in the process of planning and developing Season Two!
So we haven’t been having a holiday, in the traditional sense of the word, but we have had a very productive break!
And now … we’re back!
And back hitting the ground running. Our next Melbourne filming dates for A Life Unexpected are locked in with more interviewees and the rough cut begins editing in two weeks! One more round of interviews are taking place in early January and then we’re on the home strait.
As always, we are still taking donations to help complete the film via the Documentary Australia Foundation, and any help spreading the word is most appreciated. You’ll find all the information on how to donate on the official site here: http://alifeunexpected.com/donate/.
Direct donation link on the DAF site is here: https://www.documentaryaustralia.com.au/film/donate/482/a-life-unexpected-the-man-behind-the-miracle-mile
Keep an eye out for more news in the coming weeks and thank you again to everyone who has been so supportive to date of us and this project!
‘Till next time …
The A Life Unexpected Team
